Clay Decorative Plaster: FAQs

Clay plaster is a natural wall finish made from clay and mineral aggregates. It creates breathable interior surfaces and clay finishes with soft texture and depth. Unlike cement or gypsum plaster systems, clay plaster helps in regulating humidity naturally – contributing to a healthier indoor environment.

Its matte appearance and tactile surface create a warm, natural atmosphere (as in this modern home interior, for instance). This effect makes clay plaster for walls popular in both contemporary and heritage-inspired interiors.

The main difference between clay plaster and lime plaster is their intended use and surface character. Clay plaster is generally suited to dry interior spaces, where its soft, playful qualities can be fully appreciated. Lime plaster (such as marble lime plaster or lime rustic finishing plaster), meanwhile, is more resistant to moisture and weather exposure.

Visually, clay plaster walls – including clay rustic finishing plaster, pure earth plaster, and hemp-clay plaster – tend to feel warmer and more matte, while lime finishes create a slightly harder and more mineral appearance. Both clay and lime plaster systems remain breathable and aligned with traditional, natural construction principles.

Clay plaster can be applied to a variety of absorbent interior substrates including gypsum plaster, drywall, mineral renders, and various stone and brick surfaces. Clay plaster over drywall is especially common in modern interiors, where it adds natural texture and depth. For the best performance and longevity, surfaces should be stable, dry, and properly prepared before application.

While some specialised systems may enable clay plaster exterior walls, or use in rooms with higher moisture – as in this modern residence in Tallinn – clay decorative plaster is usually intended for dry, interior use.

Clay plaster finishes can range from smooth and refined, as in clay stucco or clay marmorino, to the more textured expressions seen in pure earth plaster or UKUNAKS universal clay plaster, depending on grain size and application technique. UKU clay decorative plaster is available in multiple grain fractions and handcrafted in Estonia, allowing each clay plaster wall finish to be tailored to your desired architectural style.

The UKU DECO series is a collection of decorative clay plasters enhanced with natural additives such as marble, straw, flax, mica, and seashells. These additions create bespoke textures and subtle visual depth while maintaining the breathable qualities of natural clay plaster.

Available in smooth finishes across all clay colours, the DECO series allows professional designers and homeowners alike to create highly personalised surfaces with a handcrafted, mineral character.
